Within the platform NCKTN01000062 „Biotechnological center for plant genotyping“ in PRI Havlíčkův Brod we coordinate a Sub-project TN01000062 / 04 - Potatoes in cooperation with IEB CAS and VESA Velhartice.
The solution of this unique project started in 2019 and here we present the new results achieved in 2020.

Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) from the family Asteraceae is a rootstock originating from South America, with the largest genetic diversity in Peru. It has been grown in the Czech Republic for research purposes since 1994. In the years 2019 to 2021, the amount of nitrogen mineral fertilizer and its effect on yield was tested. The monitoring took place at the Valečov research station. The research station is located at an altitude of 460 m (slightly warm district). Two varieties, Fiorella and Graciella, were included in the experiments. The fertilizer dose was 100 kg N.ha-1 compared to the variant without fertilization (0 kg N.ha-1). The results show that nitrogen fertilizer increased yields on average years and varieties by 53 %. Variety has not been found to have influence over the years. The Fiorella variety was more profitable in 2019 and 2020. In 2021 it was the Graciella variety. At the same time, the yield of tubers was also affected by the year of cultivation. The highest yields were recorded in 2020.

Limitation of using pesticides and fertilizers in water resource protection zones also applies to potato growers. Between 2019 and 2021 a research project was realized focused on this topic. The danger of undesirable substance runoff from sloped plots in potato growing was studied. Potatoes are often grown on sloped fields, therefore innovated agrotechnical procedures were proposed limiting water resource pollution with phosphorus and nitrates. Non-chemical weed regulation was also observed. Originally designed cultivation bodies for mechanical weed regulation under de-stoning technology were verified. Weed control efficacy of this measure was 6 % reduced compared to the pre-emergent herbicide application. The combination of mechanical weed control and a post-emergent herbicide was 4 % higher compared to conventional treatment. Similar results were also derived for potato yield. No statistically significant differences were determined among results. In the field of potato late blight control it was found that at present several fungicide programmes could be compiled involving registered fungicides for water resource protection zones, which are equal to programmes under conditions without limitation. Further, the results show that so far available and registered biological protection is completely ineffective or the efficacy is negligible. On contrary, the Colorado potato beetle control could be successful using several biological products.
